| Because so much activated carbon is included in the whole house filter carried at this Web site, the filter only has to be changed every 5 years according to the manufacturer. | |
| With a whole house system such as this, you do not need shower filters. Thus, while the whole house system costs more originally, it is cost-effective as the years pass. | |
| Please note that the unit carried here reflects the latest technology to remove
MTBE, the gasoline additive, as well as chlorine.
| In addition, the large amount of catalytic carbon removes chloramines,
which comes from the reaction between chlorine and ammonia in public
drinking water. Several thousand municipalities are now adding ammonia to
the drinking water to reduce the levels of chlorine carcinogenic by-products
being produced. faqs |
| With whole house systems, RADON may be an issue. If you have elevated levels of radon in your water, since carbon retains radon, the carbon filter could become a radioactive source. You do not want this in your home. Therefore, prior to deciding on a whole house filter, have your water tested for radon. If there are elevated levels, you can still get a whole house system, but the carbon tank should be placed outside the house. (As an aside, persons with carbon block filters might be introducing a radioactive source at their kitchen sinks if their water has a high radon level.) | |
| What are acceptable radon levels? The EPA suggested 300 ppm (parts per million), but the water authorities said that it would be cost prohibitive to bring levels in public drinking water down that low. So the issue went back to committee, where it remains. No one knows what safe levels are, so you will have to decide your comfort level here. Many areas have levels much higher than 300 ppm - even into numbers such as 20,000 ppm. faqs |
| Bacteria can live in pipe interiors, as well as in carbon. To address these concerns,
a UV light module can be installed in the water line.
| Following installation but before the unit is used, instructions are provided to flush the plumbing system with Chlorox to kill lurking bacteria. This action sanitizes the water pipes. faqs |
