Swimming pools and spas are conventionally treated with chlorine to kill bacteria. Chlorine is used because it was originally the least expensive means of sanitation.

Why chlorine is a bad idea:

bulletIt is a poison, which is dangerous to swimmers. Both skin absorption and inhalation exposure appear to have similar absorption rates.
bulletIt reacts with organic material and forms carcinogenic gases that can be breathed in the air above the pool water.
bulletIt is expensive to maintain.
bulletIt damages the pool and bathing suits.

A Sigma ionic purification system is the preferred alternative to chlorine

bulletSigma III eliminates the need for chlorine. Chlorine, which can be a dangerous and toxic chemical, is known to cause eye and skin irritation, hair damage, damage to swimsuits, bad odors and damage to the pool and related equipment. Chlorine has also been linked to heart disease, cancer, and other degenerative diseases.
bulletSigma III eliminates the need to periodically super-chlorinate your pool to remove inactive chlorine and other compounds (chlorination byproducts).
bulletSigma III eliminates the need for chemical algaecides and other poisons by controlling algae and fungus non-chemically.
bulletSigma III to saves money. The Sigma III drastically reduces the ongoing and never-ending expense of chlorine, along with the expense of algaecides, shock, and maintenance.
bulletSigma III eliminates the use of cyanuric acid, a form of cyanide, as a pool conditioner and stabilizer. As usage of such conditioners causes build-up of cyanide in the pool, it then becomes necessary to drain and replace the water.
bulletSigma III reduces the amount of wear and tear on your filter pumps, heating and cleaning system parts by eliminating corrosive agents such as chlorine and especially shock (super-chlorination) treatment.
bulletSigma III provides quality pool water that is virtually odorless and chemically free.
bulletSigma III comes with one of the industry's best warranties.

Please note: By law, the health departments require a minimum of residual chlorine (usually 1.0-1.5) in every pool. With ionization, most people can't smell this small amount of chlorine.

What about ozonation for an alternative treatment?

bulletOzone is lighter than water, heavier than air. It ends up above the surface of the water until it is blown away.
bulletAll pools have circulators, and the argument is given that the circulator stirs the ozone throughout the pool. Unfortunately, ozone breaks down in minutes and turned into oxygen. There simply isn't enough time for the ozone to be moved around all the pool water. The contact time is the key for biocide action.
bulletIn Europe, the ozone travels through 250' of water going up to the surface. This is a much different situation from the ozone entering 3-4" from the water surface in a swimming pool and then passing off into the air.
bulletMany ozonators treat water through a chamber by UV light. The UV light degrades after one month and should be replaced. It gets costly to keep replacing UV light bulbs.
bulletIf opting for ozonation, go for the corona discharge technology.
bulletOzone only kills bacteria, not algae. Therefore, you need algaecides.
bulletIf using ozonation already in your pool, test regularly for bacteria. The total bacteria test is $10 at this web site in the Water Testing section. Buy a supply. Note that if any chlorine is in the water, it is mandatory to destroy the chlorine first or it will throw off your test. There are instructions in the test kit for eliminating the chlorine prior to testing for bacteria.
