Hints for 24 Hours in an Electromagnetically Quiet House

These tips are meant as a consciousness-raising exercise alerting you to unsuspected sources of electromagnetic fields.

IMPORTANT!

The hints below are IN ADDITION to having a residence checked for wiring and grounding issues, as well as electric fields at the sleeping and computer areas and for fields from power lines. The professional EnviroHealth EMF evaluation (or evaluation from the EnviroHealth self-help EMF manuals) is the foundation for the improvements below.

Upon arising

bullet

Use a battery-operated clock-radio.

bullet

Use incandescent lights rather than fluorescent in the bathroom.

bullet

Measure magnetic fields from the bathroom exhaust fan. In some cases, it may be preferable to run the fan after you are out of the bathroom.

bullet

Avoid unnecessary electrical devices, such as an electric toothbrush.

bullet

Substitute a manual or battery-operated razor for the electric razor.

bullet

Avoid use of a hair dryer, or use the hose from a bonnet-type hair dryer, keeping the motor away from the body. There is also a hair dryer available where the motor is mounted on the wall - see www.less-emf.com.

bullet

Use plastic eyeglass frames instead of metal frames.

bullet

Avoid underwire bras – or any bras, as much as possible.

bullet

Do use a wind-up watch if a watch is necessary.

bullet

Do avoid wearing or carrying steel as much as possible – such as in costume jewelry, metal pens, keys.

bullet

If wearing a beeper is necessary, rotate it to different areas of the body.

Breakfast

bullet

Avoid use of a microwave oven.

bullet

Stand back from the heat coils if cooking on an electric stove.

bullet

Use a manual can opener rather than an electric can opener.

bullet

Stand back from a juicer or other motorized appliances.

bullet

Have an electric stove clock decommissioned, especially if it is on the front of the stove.

Office

bullet

Upgrade a computer monitor to one to TCO standards (www.tco-info.com) or one that measures under 1 mG one foot from the monitor or at your body.

bullet

Shield PC monitor with a radiation-reducing grounded glare guard.

bullet

Plug your computer into a grounded 3-hold outlet.

bullet

Use a corded telephone for the bulk of your calls.

bullet

Measure telephone magnetic fields with a gaussmeter while conversing on the phone.

bullet

Use a cellular phone for emergency back-up only, if necessary. Do not use a cellular phone if pregnant. Children should not use cellular phones or be around them.

bullet

If requiring a cell phone, use it sparingly and with a headset. Do not clip the phone on your person.

bullet

Measure magnetic fields from a word processor, electric typewriter, calculator, and desk lamp with a gaussmeter.

bullet

Do use a manual pencil sharpener rather than an electric sharpener.

bullet

Do maintain distance from the rear and sides of a coworker’s computer.

bullet

Do locate the building’s electric panels, transformers, etc., and do not sit near them.

bullet

Do keep wiring and surge protectors away from your feet.

bullet

Do maintain distance from copiers and other office equipment.

bullet

Do use an incandescent lamp (grounded if possible) rather than a fluorescent light if you have the option. A second choice would be a grounded, shielded fluorescent light. It should be shielded for magnetic and electric fields, as well as x-rays and high frequency fields. We do not recommend any fluorescent lights, however.

bullet

With a good reflector, a 60-watt light bulb can provide adequate light. Full spectrum incandescent light bulbs are too dim for good reading light unless you can find a fixture that accepts a 150 watt bulb.

Evening

bullet

Enjoy a healthier reading area using a grounded incandescent reading lamp - either 60-watt with a good reflector or 150-watt full spectrum in a lamp rated for 150-watt bulbs.

bullet

Consider connecting a grounding conductor to the lamp to reduce electric fields. Your lamp may have to be customized in a specialty lighting store. See the Enviro Health self help manual on reducing EMFs in your home if more information is needed.

bullet

Do not run electric wires under a chair or bed.

bullet

Maintain distance from the TV and other electrical devices.

Night

bullet

Sleep in a room that has been electromagnetically evaluated by Enviro Health or which you have evaluated by working through the Enviro Health self help manual on reducing EMFs in your home. Magnetic fields and electric fields should be as low as possible – preferably, under 1 mG for magnetic fields and in the area of 20 mV or lower for electric fields. To reach these levels, work by an electrician and plumber may be required.

bullet

Unplug an electric blanket or waterbed heater before getting into bed. Some complementary health practitioners advise against sleeping on waterbeds.

bullet

Avoid TV in the bedroom. If this is not possible, drape the monitor with a cotton sheet after turning the TV off.

bullet

Sleep in a bed that has no metal parts, such as innersprings or a metal frame.

bullet

If your bed has a metal frame and the bed is on the first or second floor (not in a high-rise), learn how to reduce electric fields with a grounding conductor - see Enviro Health manual on reducing EMFs in your home.

bullet

Do not ground a metal frame unless a dedicated ground rod can be used.

bullet

Keep metal away from the sleeping area, such as metal bookshelves or end tables.

bullet

Unplug all electric devices in the bedroom at night. (Note: In certain instances, unplugging electric devices can cause electric fields to increase. Professional measurements are recommended.)

bullet

Do keep the bedroom as close to pitch dark as possible to promote the production of melatonin by the pineal gland.

bullet

Do avoid plastics and synthetic fibers as much as possible. These materials attract ions out of the air, increasing static charges and devitalizing room air.
