Use a battery-operated clock-radio.
Use incandescent lights rather than fluorescent in the bathroom.
Measure magnetic fields from the bathroom exhaust fan. In some cases, it may be preferable to run the fan after you are out of the bathroom.
Avoid unnecessary electrical devices, such as an electric toothbrush.
Substitute a manual or battery-operated razor for the electric razor.
Avoid use of a hair dryer, or use the hose from a bonnet-type hair dryer, keeping the motor away from the body. There is also a hair dryer available where the motor is mounted on the wall - see www.less-emf.com.
Use plastic eyeglass frames instead of metal frames.
Avoid underwire bras – or any bras, as much as possible.
Do use a wind-up watch if a watch is necessary.
Do avoid wearing or carrying steel as much as possible – such as in costume jewelry, metal pens, keys.
If wearing a beeper is necessary, rotate it to different areas of the body. |
Breakfast
Avoid use of a microwave oven.
Stand back from the heat coils if cooking on an electric stove.
Use a manual can opener rather than an electric can opener.
Stand back from a juicer or other motorized appliances.
Have an electric stove clock decommissioned, especially if it is on the front of the stove. |
Office
Upgrade a computer monitor to one to TCO standards (www.tco-info.com) or one that measures under 1 mG one foot from the monitor or at your body.
Shield PC monitor with a radiation-reducing grounded glare guard.
Plug your computer into a grounded 3-hold outlet.
Use a corded telephone for the bulk of your calls.
Measure telephone magnetic fields with a gaussmeter while conversing on the phone.
Use a cellular phone for emergency back-up only, if necessary. Do not use a cellular phone if pregnant. Children should not use cellular phones or be around them.
If requiring a cell phone, use it sparingly and with a headset. Do not clip the phone on your person.
Measure magnetic fields from a word processor, electric typewriter, calculator, and desk lamp with a gaussmeter.
Do use a manual pencil sharpener rather than an electric sharpener.
Do maintain distance from the rear and sides of a coworker’s computer.
Do locate the building’s electric panels, transformers, etc., and do not sit near them.
Do keep wiring and surge protectors away from your feet.
Do maintain distance from copiers and other office equipment.
Do use an incandescent lamp (grounded if possible) rather than a fluorescent light if you have the option. A second choice would be a grounded, shielded fluorescent light. It should be shielded for magnetic and electric fields, as well as x-rays and high frequency fields. We do not recommend any fluorescent lights, however.
With a good reflector, a 60-watt light bulb can provide adequate light. Full spectrum incandescent light bulbs are too dim for good reading light unless you can find a fixture that accepts a 150 watt bulb. |
Evening
Enjoy a healthier reading area using a grounded incandescent reading lamp - either 60-watt with a good reflector or 150-watt full spectrum in a lamp rated for 150-watt bulbs.
Consider connecting a grounding conductor to the lamp to reduce electric fields. Your lamp may have to be customized in a specialty lighting store. See the Enviro Health self help manual on reducing EMFs in your home if more information is needed.
Do not run electric wires under a chair or bed.
Maintain distance from the TV and other electrical devices. |
Night
Sleep in a room that has been electromagnetically evaluated by Enviro Health or which you have evaluated by working through the Enviro Health self help manual on reducing EMFs in your home. Magnetic fields and electric fields should be as low as possible – preferably, under 1 mG for magnetic fields and in the area of 20 mV or lower for electric fields. To reach these levels, work by an electrician and plumber may be required.
Unplug an electric blanket or waterbed heater before getting into bed. Some complementary health practitioners advise against sleeping on waterbeds.
Avoid TV in the bedroom. If this is not possible, drape the monitor with a cotton sheet after turning the TV off.
Sleep in a bed that has no metal parts, such as innersprings or a metal frame.
If your bed has a metal frame and the bed is on the first or second floor (not in a high-rise), learn how to reduce electric fields with a grounding conductor - see Enviro Health manual on reducing EMFs in your home.
Do not ground a metal frame unless a dedicated ground rod can be used.
Keep metal away from the sleeping area, such as metal bookshelves or end tables.
Unplug all electric devices in the bedroom at night. (Note: In certain instances, unplugging electric devices can cause electric fields to increase. Professional measurements are recommended.)
Do keep the bedroom as close to pitch dark as possible to promote the production of melatonin by the pineal gland.
Do avoid plastics and synthetic fibers as much as possible. These materials attract ions out of the air, increasing static charges and devitalizing room air. |
