Read Labels Carefully.

Avoid chlorine, ammonia, methylene chloride, phenol, nitrobenzene, formaldehyde, cresol, naphthalene, ethanol, xylene, propane, nitrous oxide, paradichlorobenzene, toluene, etc.
The list of chemicals that could have adverse health effects is long, and regulations and research lag behind what consumers need to know. You have to protect yourself.

If in doubt about a chemical, do a web search. In a search engine, type in the name of the chemical + health effects.

Many people have been chemically injured or are simply concerned about health issues. These individuals constitute a market for manufacturers either specializing in healthier products or offering selections geared towards a niche market. That niche market is getting larger by the day, as more individuals are looking toward green products and products with less off-gassing. For example, many of the laundry product manufacturers are offering hypoallergenic versions of their detergents or substitutes for chlorinated bleach. Hydrogen peroxide is an easy alternative to chlorinated bleach. Add 1/2 cup to the wash load (after water is in the washing machine).
